One Month from Your Move

Some might call you crazy for planning and packing for your move over a month in advance. But you’d be crazy not to be prepared! After you’ve decided on where you’re moving to, it’s a good idea to call Matthews Moving Systems to schedule your moving day. Summer tends to be particularly busy, so if you are moving during the warmer months, it’s a good idea to book us as soon as you know your date.

During this time, it’s also a good idea to order your moving boxes and other packing supplies you may need. These supplies don’t take up too much space and let you start packing and planning more efficiently.

Now is a great time to sort through and discard or donate unwanted items. This makes your moving easier and helps clear clutter from your home. A good rule of thumb is that if you haven’t used the item in months, you probably don’t need it. Decluttering your life can be therapeutic and helps your move seem more freeing than a burden.

In addition to clearing out unnecessary items, you can begin packing items you plan on keeping that you don’t use as much. These items can be excess dining and cooking appliances, off-season clothes, and items already in storage. It’s important to keep everything as organized as possible by labeling your boxes and making sure to stay to a strict regimen.

Notify the post office, your doctors, dentists, and other services of your new address.

Let your HR or payroll representative at your work know you’re moving.

Two Weeks Out from Your Move

As time winds down till your big moving day, you can conduct some more practical preparations. If you have pianos or swing sets that need disassembly, organize that now.

Request off work or arrange a timeframe where you can dedicate all of your energy to your move.

Notify your utility companies such as phone, electric, cable, gas, ISP, water, and others of your move. Some of these companies can help your move as well by setting up in your new home.

One Week from Moving Day

You can now comfortably pack fragile and loose items that you won’t need for a week. It’s a good idea to plan out your clothes for the week so you know what you can pack.

The Day Before Your Big Move

Make a note of any items or furniture you have that’s fragile and let us know. We’ll take extra care of your belongings.

Pack a personal bag that will stay with you during the move. This bag will have essential items like your wallet, checkbook, keys, passports, cash, phone, prescription meds, and toiletries. Isolating these items will keep them all in one easy-to-remember place. The next 24 hours can be a blur of moving parts and chaos. It’s easy to lose important items unless they’re consolidated in one place.
